One of the first comics we heard about when we headed to Mumbai was Tanmay Bhat. After all, he runs India’s first and only comedy podcast, which hit #1 on iTunes India– that is, until it was marked explicit and banned. Before the ban, he scored a coup by interviewing star Canadian comic, Russell Peters. Named a Top 10 Comic by the Times of India, Tanmay is one of South Asia’s youngest, brightest and hottest voices on the comedy scene.
Tanmay has been playing the circuit since 2009, and shortly after he made the rounds on open mic nights, he went pro. His big break came opening for renowned Indian comic actor Vir Das. Tanmay is also a member of the awesome Weirdass Comedy – India’s first and only comedy company that writes, performs, directs all comedy content on all formats. There he works as a scriptwriter and political satirist where he is developing an Indian counterpart to Comedy Central’s Celebrity Roasts.
He was one of the first four comedians to be featured at The Comedy Store Mumbai’s first all-Indian comedian line up and he is now a regular performer at the Comedy Store. Check out this clip of Tanmay performing there, where he shows he can get laughs in both Hindi and English (Note to English speakers- 1:06 is downright hilarious):
